From Pizza Maker to

Software Developer:

It was a gray, rainy day, and I was sitting in my small apartment with a cup of tea. My phone buzzed — a message from my mom: “How are things in Germany? Have you found a job yet?”

My heart sank a little. What should I write back? That I was going through job listings every day without success? That I felt like an outsider here? That I barely had enough money for myself, let alone any to send back to her?

I set my phone aside and stared out the window. Everything was different here — the language, the people, the culture. And me? I felt like a nobody, just trying to get by.

How I Found My Way as a Migrant
in Germany

Ali, Software Developer, 08.01.2025

From Dreamer to Developer

Today, two years later, I work as a web developer in an international company. Sometimes, I can hardly believe it myself. I don’t just have a job; I have a future. I can send money to my family and take care of myself. And the best part? I have hope again.
I’ve learned that success isn’t just about technical skills. It’s about believing in yourself, asking for help, and sticking with it, no matter how hard it gets. And most importantly: You’re not alone. There are always people willing to support you. You just need to take the first step.

Why I Didn’t Give Up

But giving up? Never. I had a dream: a better life.

Everything changed when I met a fellow migrant from my home country, Ali. He worked as a developer in a big company and shared his story: how he completed a training program at the Digital Career Institute and found his path despite challenges. His words clicked with me. Maybe I could do it too.

The Path to a Better Life

After meeting Ali, I looked into the Digital Career Institute. It sounded almost too good to be true: hands-on training in web development, flexible and hands-on. And for unemployed people like me, it was even free.

I was skeptical. Could I really do this? My German wasn’t great, and as for tech? I barely knew anything. But I had nothing to lose. So, I signed up.

The Challenge of Learning Something New

The first weeks were tough. JavaScript, HTML, CSS… it all felt like a foreign language within a foreign language. But the teachers and my classmates were patient. Everyone had their own story, their own struggles. And that brought us closer together.
Every Friday, we had language lessons. During the week, I attended web development courses, and in the evenings, I practiced. With each small victory, like a working piece of code, praise from a teacher or an error-free vocab test, I thought to myself: Hey, you can do this.

Apart from the language lessons, DCI had lots of other benefits for me:

The Difficult Start in a Foreign Land

I came to Germany four years ago, full of hope and dreams. But reality quickly caught up with me. Without good German skills, it was hard to make connections. People were friendly, yes, but always kept their distance. And without a network? Zero chance of finding a job.

I did whatever work I could: cleaning offices, making pizzas, delivering newspapers. But this wasn’t the life I had imagined.

Money was tight. Sometimes, I had to choose between a warm meal and a bus ticket. Friends? None. Most nights, I sat alone, wondering if this was all a mistake.

If you see yourself in my story, I want to tell you one thing: It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Take the first step. Whether it’s learning the language, building connections, or trying something new.
